"[T]he test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function." ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Crack-Up, published in Esquire (1936) As a conscientious consultant, you are an expert with a deep understanding of your industry. You understand the complexities and nuances others miss and know how they can impact your clients. Given your depth of knowledge, you might be tempted to pick a topic and just start writing.
"Creativity . . . consists largely on rearranging what we know in order to find out what we do not know. To think creatively, we must be able to look afresh at what we normally take for granted" ~ George F. Kneller, The Art and Science of Creativity The most effective way to demonstrate your depth of knowledge is to share your ideas and insights. You can do this through writing articles, posting on social media, publishing a book, hosting a podcast (or being a guest), speaking at conferences, or facilitating a workshop. Your goal is to add to the conversation instead of adding to the noise; to provide real value to your audience.
"The way ChatGPT writes in the first person about itself? The way it feeds you its output one word at a time instead of all at once as produced under the hood? All on purpose. Clever product design, marketing, and reporting are being invested in the illusion that LLMs can think. They cannot. Propagating this illusion, at bottom, is a power grab by people in the technology industry." ~ Raman Shah, Data Craftsman The legal implications of using generative AI are considerable. It directly impacts your ability to protect your intellectual property and it may well result in your being in breach of your contract. Using generative AI can also impact your reputation. And it deprives you of the joy of thinking through an issue, wrestling with your ideas, and deepening your understanding.
"We think of storytelling as this wildly creative artistic form. And in many ways, it is. But no matter where you go in the world, no matter when you go there, you will always find the same astonishing thing. These people tell stories. On the whole, their stories are exactly like ours: the same basic obsessions, the same basic structures." ~ Jonathan Gottschall, HBR's IdeaCast Stories are powerful. But they aren't the only effective way to share your ideas with your audience. And if you are afraid that you are not a good storyteller or aren't telling stories the right way, this emphasis on storytelling might be holding you back.
"We are drowning in information while starving for wisdom." ~ Edward O. Wilson, Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge High-quality articles position you as an authoritative expert. They capture your readers' attention and add to critical conversations about today's world. But how do you know if an article is genuinely high-quality?
